Did you know that there is an association for ex-pupils of Langley Girls?
The Adremian Association was formed in 1922, although the word ‘Adremian’ did not come into being until 1950. It was inspired by the school motto Ad Rem Mox Nox, and was suggested by the then secretary Betty Bleay.
The first Head of the school was Miss Fox, a formidable lady who was always interested in the progress of her ‘old girls’. Articles about them appeared in the school magazine and there was an old girls’ blazer which was on sale in 1930 at Ardec’s in the High Street for 31s 6d, which today would be about £1.52.
The Adremians had sports teams in the 1940s, including hockey and netball. They have given various items to the school up to the present day – glass trophy cases, recording equipment, the handrail in the hall and a sundial which is on the Technology building being just a few. They also give a Science Prize each year to the student with outstanding grades at A level in sciences. The winner in 2016 was Isabelle Picard who has gone on to study at Cambridge.
We produced a book for the school’s 90th anniversary in 2009, called HATS OFF! All the profits from the book have gone to the school and a star backcloth was bought which is being used now at the school for drama productions and which was recently seen at the Media Awards event.
The Adremians still meet every year in September for a lunch and an Annual General Meeting. These are great occasions and the noise generated in the hall is amazing. Next year's reunion is on Saturday 23rd September 2017.
A message from the committee: We need new younger members and if you are leaving school please think about joining us. We would be very happy to hear from you.
The images below are items that the Adremians have purchased in recent years.
The Adremians decided to buy a sundial for the school as an anniversary present, and this was installed on the Technology Building.
The large star backcloth that is used in many music & drama productions, was one of the items purchased with the profits from the book sales.
In the summer of 2015, the Adremians funded a wonderful bench that encircles a tree in the school grounds where students like to sit.
Each year the Adremian Association select a student for their Science Award. In 2016 this was awarded to Isabelle Picard who gained A*A*A*A in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology and Physics. Congratulations Isabelle and good luck with your studies at Cambridge.
