Kate Kayaks at the London Youth Games

The London Youth Games (LYG) is the biggest annual sporting event in all of Europe and it encompasses all sports.

I compete in LYG in kayak sprint event. I kayak with the Bromley Canoe Club (BCC) and have being doing so for 5 years as well as competing for 5 years in LYG. Kayak sprint is quite simply a 200m straight sprint in very long thin boats.

Each year I have managed to reach the finals (sometimes after multiple re-runs of my heats.). This year I however I qualified 2nd out of 3 heats and 24 boroughs. Unfortunately, I narrowly missed out on a medal position coming in 4th (although by only seconds). It was slightly disappointing as I had trained very hard all year for it.

Each year the Bromley sprint team has improved its overall position as well as the team’s individual places. This is particularly impressive when you look at the fact we are up against teams such as Richmond, Tower Hamlets and Kingston upon Thames, quite a few of these teams have fully paid mangers, access to the Thames every day and purpose built faculties. Due to our location, most of the time we train at west Wickham swimming pool and it is only 2 months before the games that we actually train for 200m at Chipstead lake in Sevenoaks.

In saying that, I can happily say that this year Bromley’s LYG kayak sprint team came joint 2nd with Tower Hamlets! This is our best result ever, and with points scored from this put Bromley firmly at the top of the leader board for the Jubilee trophy with a 60-point lead. In celebration of our team's success our coach got soaked as seen here!

As a team, we finally managed to enter a competitor for sprint into every age category and all of the competitors made it through to the finals. We had:

  • Two 6th places
  • Three 4th places (including me)
  • And one 3rd place in our senior female cirrus!

As you can imagine as a team we are very pleased with our results.
