Greetings from Tenerife

Whilst the rest of us return to school as normal, some lucky Y9 and Y10 students have been whisked away to sunny Tenerife. Each day they will send us an update about their adventures!

Tenerife 3 2017

Day one

We arrived in Tenerife after an easy journey and on the way to our partner school we stopped in a village called el Medano and got our first look at the beautiful coastline. Once we arrived at school we were greeted with dos besos by our partners, it was great to see them after so long! We spent the afternoon and evening with our partner families, some of us got to try typical Canarian food or visit the local town.

Day two

We went to the south of the island where it was very hot and sunny!! We went out on a boat trip and were so lucky to see so many dolphins, it was amazing! Afterwards we had some free time and  were able to try out our best Spanish ordering ice creams and tapas. We've learned lots of typical Canarian phrases already.

Day three

Today we went to the Teide volcano with our partners. We made our way up the volcano by coach and stopped on the way up to take in the views and learn more about how the volcano was formed at the visitors centre. We then carried on up the volcano and stopped for a long walk. On the walk we were singing funny Spanish songs and teaching our partners English ones! It was tiring but amazing to be up so high and see the volcanic landscape.  After the walk we all had a picnic together and had some free time. Now it's time for the weekend and our partner have lots of fun things planned for us!

Day Six

What a weekend we had! As Bella said, "the best weekend of my life!" We came back today full of stories of what we had done- some of us had gone to the mountains, explored the north of the island, gone to the water park, or tried typical Canarian food. We started off the day with a presentation that some of us had prepared about Canarian traditions and festivals. Then we went to Loro Parque where we saw some amazing animals and shows. Some of us went in the splash zone and got absolutely soaked by the orcas! We also learned about how the park protects endangered species and cares for the animals there. We had lunch all together in a restaurant where another group gave a presentation about Spanish school life. We had a great day!

Day seven

We are lucky that our trip has coincided with the "semana cultural" (culture week) that our partner school prepares every  year. Today we got to see what they do for "día de los idiomas" (language day). We went around the workshops with our Spanish partners and joined in with the activities. For example we saw a show that the primary students prepared, we learned how to swing dance, and we did culture and language workshops and also watched a funny show that the secondary students had prepared themselves, some of us were even pulled up onto the stage! We have been able to see what school life is like for young people in Tenerife, we definitely like the idea of being able to wear a comfy tracksuit to school! The students also call their teachers by their first names and the timing of the school day is completely different, although they study many of the same subjects. Now time to spend our last night with our partners.

Last Day!

This morning it was time to say our goodbyes. We have had the most amazing week and learned so much about Spanish life and language in Tenerife. It's been a challenge at times but it was so worth it. Some of our partner families gave us beautiful gifts as a memory of our time there. There were lots of tears and hugs as we said goodbye, we really didn't want to leave! We've definitely made friends for life and are now honorary Tinerfeños.

Adiós y gracias Tenerife :)
